OVERVIEW

The St. Catharines Rowing League has been active in St. Catharines since 1989. Our goal is to provide a fun and non-competitive environment for adults to participate in the sport of rowing.

The program caters to rowers of all experience levels.

Crews are co-ed and made up of about 16 members.
Only 9 members are required to row, so if you are unable to attend a practice or race, your crew will still be able to participate.

Social activities such as a free BBQ after every race night and end-of-year banquet are included with membership.

We offer 3 sessions of rowing each year:

session 1

Starts:
Monday, May 26, 2025
Ends:
Sunday, July 27, 2025

session 2

Starts:
 August 11, 2025
Ends:
Sunday, September 21, 2025.

End of Season Banquet:
Friday, October 3, 2025

meet and greet night

Meet and Greet night typically takes place the week before each session starts and is held at the Clubhouse/Alumni Hall on Henley Island.

The Clubhouse/Alumni Hall is located straight ahead from the bridge when you enter Henley Island. Go straight up the hill and you will find a large parking lot to the left. If the lot is full, there is ample parking around back if you turn right as you cross the bridge.

The building is located just after the parking lot. You will have a chance to meet your crew and/or coach, select the crew practice schedule, and exchange crew contact information.

We do advise to come prepared with your personal schedule, so that you can have input on selecting your extra crew practice times. You will also be able to sign up for a novice tank night session.

novice tank night

This is an introductory session for novice rowers held prior to the on-water practices, at either the Brock University or Ridley College indoor rowing facility.

It will help you to become familiar with the concept of rowing before actually going out on the water with your crew.

practices

Weekly practice dates and times are determined by the coach and an elected crew captain on meet and greet night.

Practices are 2 hours long and held during weekday evenings (6-8pm) and weekends (8-10am, 10-12pm, 12-2pm, 2-4pm).

Each crew typically practices two-three times a week.
Practices require at least 9 crew members to be in attendance. Since crews consist of up to 16 members, it is okay if you have to miss a practice.

Some crews may organize a schedule to have only 9 members come to each practice, who row the entire time. Others crews might decide to break up the practice into two one-hour segments and rowers switch out.
Members may be required to row port, and/or starboard, and/or coxie, as we cannot guarantee designated positions on any crew.

regatta RACE Protocols

Crews participate in 5 race nights each session:
  • The first 4 race nights are held on Thursday nights, starting at 6pm.
  • The 5th race takes place on Sunday. Please see the calendar for more information.
------------------------------------
  • Race Format: Each event consists of 2 races per team: one 1000m and one 500m race.
  • Race Details:
    • 1000m Race: Starts at the 500m pylon and ends at the 1500m pylon.
    • 500m Race: Starts at the 1000m pylon and ends at the 1500m pylon (subject to change)..
  • Start Type: Floating starts.
  • Start and Finish Signals: Indicated by an air horn.
  • Eligibility: Only registered SCRL rowers may row in races. All crews must be composed of the same team members (except for coxswains)..
  • Sportsmanship: All rowers (including novices) should be given the opportunity to row in at least one of the two 'point sensitive' races at each regatta (not to be confused with the 'Composite Race' which is an additional race just for fun). No one is required to row in any race they do not wish to but should not be pressured by crew or coach to forfeit their race.
  • Substitutions: Crews with rowers from other teams will lose points (number of substitutions x their finish position (ie. **3 or 4  for 1st, **2 or 3 for 2nd and **1 or 2 for 3rd). Their finish placement will be based on their number of points ie. Finishing 1st with 3 substitutions would move them to 2nd place. Finishing 1st with 6 substitutions would place them in 3rd place etc..**depending on the number of boats in a race
  • *Gender Requirement: All crews must have at least 4 females rowing. Crews with fewer than 4 female rowers are considered exhibition and will be placed last.
  • Weather Impact: Race distances and start locations may change due to weather conditions.
Progression:
  • Structure: Progression involves 3 or 4 regattas, each with multiple round-robin events.
  • Finals: The final regatta (4th or 5th) will feature several weighted (by points) medaled finals. The overall winners are determined by a combination of finish positions and accumulated points from the 1000m and 500m races. (ie 2nd and 1st beats 1st and 3rd; In the case of a points tie, highest placement in the 1000m race determines the winner)
Points System:
  • Points Allocation:
  • Regattas With Four Boat Races
    • 1st Place: 36 points
    • 2nd Place: 27 points
    • 3rd Place: 18 points
    • 4th Place:  9 points
  • Regattas With Three Boat Races
    • 1st Place   27 points
    • 2nd Place  18 points
    • 3rd Place   9 points
    • 4th Place:  9 points  (if some of the races have a 4th entry
Session Championship:
  • The team with the most accumulated points over the regattas wins the session team champion trophy. In the case of a tie, both teams share the trophy.

I've registered, now what Do I Do?

We will process your registration form and assign you to a crew as soon as we receive payment.

We will do our best to accommodate specific crew requests, but cannot guarantee there will be space available.

The 3rd step, after registration and payment, is your enrollment in Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA). This step must be completed before you are allowed on the water for insurance and liability reasons.

After registration closes, we finalize the crew rosters and send a copy to the coach and/or crew leader.

You may be contacted by either the coach or crew leader, who will provide you with further information.

If not, you will meet your crew and coach on "Meet and Greet" night before the session begins.

See the "Calendar" section for our Calendar and session schedules as they become available.

See the "About" section for further information about our League.

Every member must read the Code of Conduct and watch the Rowing Canada Safety Video under "Calendar".
